Book Art

Lunar Horizon Book Art Workshops

Why make a book when you can purchase one? Does making art with your hands matter now that we have digital mediums? Artists have been making their own books for centuries. Throughout the ages artists were drawn to book construction because of the creative freedom and independence it allowed them.

Create your own handmade journaling book or sketchbook! The workshops are designed to be welcoming and all-inclusive for groups or individuals from 12 years - adult.   The workshops can also be adapted to younger age children and families.

Intro to Book Art Workshops: Japanese Stab-Stitch Binding & Pamphlet Binding

  • Time: 2- 3 hour workshop

  • Where: Your Venue or Home

  • Who: Ages 12 yrs- adult

Description: Create two of your very own soft- cover books! First, warm up with a three- signature soft covered book using a pamphlet stitch and then learn the makings of a soft covered book using a Japanese stab stitch binding. Participants will learn how to plan, punch, fold and bind their folios, creating their very own handmade books. They can then decorate their new books with stamps, stencils or decorative paper. Stab-stitch bookbinding, originated in China during the Edo period in 1603, was the most common style of stab-stitch binding. The binding method was adapted in both Korea and Japan. Chinese stab binding traditionally had four holes, Korean stab binding had five, and Japanese stab binding used different amounts of holes for different types of books.
