2023 Crown to Ground Theme:

Birds, Birches & Butterflies

  • Micro inspection

    Instruction about local ecosystems using related biofacts.

    Naturalist led birding walks and insect hunts.

    Introduction to citizen science activities.

  • Leaf painting & print collage

    Create sustainable nature based art projects that promote social and emotional wellness for all.

    Participants will be able to describe and inform others on bio-diversity through integrative art projects

  • Environmental education

    Discussion revolving around conservation issues surrounding local ecosystems.

    All participants will receive and understand a list of actions they can take to lessen their impact on native birds and insects.

Birches, Birds & Butterflies

July 11-13 10 am- 1pm at “The Station” located in downtown Onchiota, NY

July 25 - 27 10am- 1pm at “Otto’s Abode” located in Wanakena, NY

Through this 2023 program, participants will:

·        Learn about native songbirds, raptors and waterfowl and understand their natural history

·        Understand the role different bird species play in the ecosystem

·        Recognize the conservation issues surrounding native birds and develop actions they can take to mitigate these problems

·        Understand the relationship between native plants, invertebrates and songbirds

·        Create cognitive-based art projects that encourages critical thinking and awareness on how to care for the environment

Meet the Facilitators: Mary Hall & Carol Marie Vossler

Mary Hall & Carol Marie Vossler first met in 1979 as forestry majors at Paul Smiths College. Mary went on to work in the recreation field as an Environmental Educator & Naturalist. Carol Marie was a forester first, then an Art Educator and Artist integrating art, science and forestry. Together, both have a proven collection of hands-on lessons and eco-friendly activities they have used during their multiple day camps and professional development programs.

Crown to Grounds mission is to promote a fun, multi-disciplinary art and nature education program for kids, adults and teachers. All the lessons adhere to New York State Learning and Next Generation Science Standards.

Price: $125.00/3days or $45/day Come for one day or all three!

Drop-ins welcome if space is available. We are on Rain or Shine so dress appropriately! Fee includes camp swag, all materials, snacks. Child must bring own lunch. If you need to cancel your reservation for any reason, we must be contacted at least 10 days prior to the camp start date in order to be eligible for a refund. Less than 10 days prior to the first day of your camp session, your registration fee is non-refundable, unless the class is canceled by staff. Please notify staff if your child will be unable to attend, is arriving late, or leaving early on any particular day of camp.
